Reading children have a new place to splash and play.
The newly expanded City Park playground and splash pad were officially opened Wednesday morning.
Some lucky children, however, got to tryout the spray pool features a day early when crews from the city's public works department turned on the water for a test run, said Daphne Klahr, Reading Recreation Commission executive director.
Ground was broken in September for the water-play and all-abilities activity areas, next to the existing playground at 11th and Washington streets.
The $1 million project was funded with Community Development block grant funds.
The work also included other upgrades to the 30-acre park, such as walking trails and additional benches.
The city has several other playground improvement projects underway, including at Third and Spruce, Sixth and Amity, 11th and Pike, and Baer Park.
